AFRFAF: What we do…

Formerly deployed servicemen and servicewomen face challenges that are often caused by their time on active duty but ones that we all can relate to.
Generally, a disabled veteran can keep up financially because of VA or military retirement income. But when an extraordinary expense comes up, problems arise.
Our 100% disabled veterans who frequently live paycheck to paycheck have no opportunity for second jobs, OT, vacation or sick pay, or commissions & bonuses to fill in financial gaps. But, that is when we step up. We also make grants to folks who are short financially due to awaiting start of their VA disability benefits or benefits for the new GI Bill for college. These two types of grants meet somewhat different needs than those made when there were large unit deployments.  But to the folks who need the help, our grants are appreciated beyond measure. A wife of a recent grant recipient said “… we will remember you forever …”.
Examples of our grants include …
  • Help to a 100% disabled vet so his family could hire a moving company to move from a rental apartment  into their first new home.
  • Pay a rental deposit so a Navy vet could get her rented apartment before her VA education benefits started.
  • Help a 100% disabled army officer make a mortgage payment  after a month of unanticipated  expenses for family eye glasses and auto repairs.
  • Pay the mortgage for an Air Force sergeant who was medically retired at 100% disability but his VA disability benefits did not start and he was short.
As we say, AFRFAF helps the folks who answered the call to defend our country and who now need our help.
